February Meeting Highlights

The February 10 meeting began with a short business meeting:

  • Service Project for the year will be “Operation School Bell” to provide new hand-knit hats for children (K-3rd grade) in need. This is a project of the Assistance League. Please use acrylic yarn for washability, and if you need a simple pattern, Margaret Fizer or Sue Culbertson are happy to provide one.
  • President Joyce Arthur asked for a vote of those accepting the By-laws that were emailed marking suggested changes last week. Passed.
  • Tia Purdy was elected to be Guild VP for 2024.
  • A new process was used for Show and Tell where finished projects were placed on a table with a tag (see below).

Program: Compass Moon Creations

Jennefer Marker introduced her family business that started in 2017. They purchase 600 fleeces from 26 small family farms in the Pacific Northwest (PNW), Colorado, and Delaware. She works educating 4H and FFA youth all over the PNW in the types of animals. She presented a lively education to the Guild about the various types of wool, what the properties are and the best types for various knits. She brought a lot of her hand spun yarn to purchase, as well as stitch markers and stickers she has created. Click here to visit her Etsy shop!

March 2024 Meeting

Paco Handly is coming to introduce us to Naal Binding, an ancient form of knitting from Scandinavia using a single needle, originally from a whale. He will be using a PowerPoint and bring several demonstrations.

January 2024 Meeting Cancelled

December Meeting Highlights

Our last meeting of the year was led by Program Coordinator Marcia Smith. After welcoming members and guests, she highlighted several upcoming events, including Magic at the Mill and the Filaments Traveling Show exhibit at the Mill until January 31. This juried 47-piece exhibit features textiles from 24 different weavers.

This month concluded our year-long project of mini sweaters which were shown in a trunk show and adorning a small Christmas tree.

Just a reminder to renew your dues for 2024. Visitors may attend two meetings before joining. The dues are $30 a year and pay for the room rental, renting a mailbox, stamps, business cards, and a few other supplies. Janet Bubl has the membership forms and is collecting the dues as a check or cash. Thank you for your support of the Salem Millstream Knitting Guild. A roster of members will be emailed after the February meeting.

Temperature Knitting Projects

Tia Purdy showed her Temperature Blanket that will be used on her queen-sized bed in her camper. She suggested anyone interested try a smaller project!

Cindy Barrick then showed her Temperature Scarf she has been knitting this year and explained how she chose the yarn and colors for each temperature range, a 5- or 10-degree range, from 0 to 110 degrees.

Show & Tell

There were over 30 items shared. Some of these we’d seen while they were being knit, and others are in the process of being knit.

  • Cindy Barrick knit a Cashmere Snowflake Hat using cashmere yarn from a kit from Always Be Kind Yarn.
  • Joyce Arthur showed some socks and a shawl.
  • Janet Bubl showed a cotton double potholder/trivet.
  • Marcia Graciosa showed a pair of cable knit fingerless mitts.
  • Genevieve Ricknor showed a multicolored hat.
  • Su Fennern modeled her Wrixlan Jacket using Studio Donegal yarn (pattern greatly adapted).
  • Chris Golden modeled her Alaska Sweater.

Upcoming Events

January 13 Meeting

Judith Bither will tell the secret of how a group of mostly retired women saved a small yarn shop in Northern California and turned it into a thriving, destination yarn shop.

Our new Guild President, Joyce Arthur, has announced a Board meeting immediately following the meeting. All Guild members are invited to attend.

November Meeting Highlights

Marcia Smith welcomed members and visitors to our monthly meeting.

We were asked to sign up to sit at our Guild table at the annual Magic at the Mill at the Willamette Heritage Center for the dates December 19-23, 5:30-8 p.m. Thank you to Debbie Juul for coordinating this for us.

Joyce Arthur was elected to be the Guild President for 2024-2025. Congratulations, Joyce!

There was a reminder that annual dues to be a member of the Guild for 2024 are $30. You can bring cash or a check to the December or January meeting. Janet Bubl has the membership form. Visitors can attend two meetings before paying dues.

Mini sweaters for both November (Gumdrop) and December (Cabled Pullover) were shared. Thank you to Su Fennern who coordinated this with all the patterns and worked with demonstrators. She has a thank you gift for all who volunteered.

Show & Tell

  • Patty Scruggs was wearing the holly leaf tie that was demonstrated at the October meeting.
  • Kathi Holt wore the Dubonnet sweater she just finished using John Arbon yarn with a pattern she bought from The Wooly Thistle. She commented that she still needed to block it.
  • Sandy Galbraith knitted a cowl using yarn from the library craft sale.
  • Judith Bither brought a Portfolio Scarf she knitted with sock yarn.
  • Cindy Barrick brought several hats she knitted for a service project using the Barley Hat pattern by Tin Can Knits in Berroco Ultra Wool and Cascade Heritage Prints.

  • Final sign-ups for Magic at the Mill
  • Mini Sweater Trunk Show – bring mini sweaters you’ve knit and a small trunk or chest if you have one.
  • Highlighting the Temperature Scarf or Blanket: Tia and Cindy have been working on these all year and will share their progress, process, and tips for success.
  • The Guild needs to choose a service project for 2024. Several ideas have been suggested. Do you have one you are willing to coordinate?

October Meeting Highlights

The October meeting got off to a slow start with both the President and Secretary being home sick (thanks to Su Fennern for taking photos). Past President Janet Bubl stepped in at the last minute to lead the meeting.

Su showed the mini sweater for the month, the Long Sleeved Baby (Surprise) Jacket. Adapted from a pattern by Elizabeth Zimmerman, it was designed to be a quick and clever baby sweater. She eventually adapted the pattern to be knit in sizes from infant to adult.

Program

Kathy Goebel and Heather Sly-Haley worked up leaf patterns to knit for Fall and Winter. Most of those present took advantage of knitting together to create some lovely leaves.

  • Debbie Juul knit the Sophie Scarf by PetiteKnit (she also made a blanket for her first grandchild).
  • Lily Sly-Haley knitted a sweater for Piggy.
  • Lynda Hoodward is making steady progress on her fabulous Color Kaleidoscope Poncho by Marly Bird.
  • Cindy Barrick is working on a series of Barley Hats by Tin Can Knits. She’s also enjoying using the free app!
  • Marjory Lange knitted a bandana.

Upcoming Events

Mini Sweater ‘Trunk Show’

Both November and December mini sweaters will be shown this month as next month they will be the highlight of a Mini Sweater Trunk Show! If you have a mini “trunk” you can bring to use, that would be great. Here’s an example:

November Meeting

This is our annual election cycle and we will be electing a President by ballot. All members present may vote.

November Program

Several members are bringing patterns for simple holiday decorations to knit. Members can sit and knit on their own projects or try a couple of these new ones. Please bring some extra yarn and corresponding needles for a wreath, candy cane, or snowflake, for example.

Magic at the Mill

Sign-ups will be available to work evening shifts December 19 – 23 (5:30 – 8 PM) for this magical Salem event. Details will be available at the November and December meetings. Thanks to Debbie Juul for coordinating this for us.

Dues Reminder

Annual dues ($30) for 2024 can be brought in cash or check to the December meeting. Visitors can attend two meetings before paying dues.

September Meeting Highlights

Joyce Cook, President, welcomed members and guests. One guest came from Eugene, and two others found out about the Guild at the State Fair. She announced there would be a Board meeting following the meeting to go over the surveys of the kinds of meetings and programs members would like next year.

Mini Sweater – Little Lopapeysa

The knitting of mini sweaters continues. There were several lovely examples this month.

Show and Tell

  • Heather Sly-Haley knit a bag for her yoga mat.
  • Sandy Galbraith showed the socks she’d entered in the State Fair.
  • Joyce Cook showed her lace scarf, pointing out the cat pin.
  • Debbie Juul showed the Christmas stocking she just finished for her grandchild.
  • Kathy Goebel showed the numerous hats for donation she knit all with scrap yarn.
  • Diane Williams knit and felted this backpack with leftover wool yarn.
  • Genevieve Rickner modeled her cotton knit cardigan with a pattern from the 1940s.

Program

Laura Salisbury, knit designer and yarn dyer from Always Be Kind Yarn in Eugene, told the story of her business, showing her yarns and some of the items she has knit with them. A portion of the proceeds from her yarns go to support suicide awareness and prevention.

Her products are available on the web and in the Eugene yarn shop. Laurie dyed a lovely yarn for our Knitting Guild called “Millstream”!

She developed this heel construction (diamond heel) to keep the stripes aligned. Her sock patterns are also available on the website.

Upcoming Events

October 14 Meeting

This falls on the same weekend as the Oregon Flock and Fiber Festival at the Linn County Fairgrounds. Perhaps some will want to carpool there after our meeting. There will be food carts available for lunch at the Fairgrounds.

To accommodate this, the Guild meeting will be shorter. There is not a formal program, but for those who want to stay, we will have a few fall patterns to knit. Please bring yarn, any size with appropriate needles, to knit a fall leaf or acorn.

August Meeting Highlights

We had a great turnout for our annual meeting at Smith Creek Village in Silver Falls State Park. Thanks to Marcia Smith for coordinating the reservation and helping Su Fennern with an imaginative activity. Su went above and beyond in finding and printing 32 unique patterns for “mug rugs” with names such as “Chocolate Bar,” “Seashell Coaster,” “Christmas Tree,” and “Mosaic Trivet.” Here’s the complete list:

Cindy and Su showed the mini sweater they knit for the month. It was a bottom-up, and all pieces had to be sewn together.

After lunch, we moved outside to the lawn, sitting in a circle and showing the knitting project that each one was working on. What a variety from such a talented group!

Upcoming Events

September 9 Meeting

  • For our program, we are welcoming Laura Salisbury, owner of Always Be Kind Yarn. She started the business following the suicide of her 25-year-old daughter. She will be sharing her story and offering some of her yarn for purchase.
  • All items for our service project for those fighting breast cancer are due at this meeting. We are in line to surpass our goal of 100 items!
  • There will be a quarterly Board meeting following this meeting, where we will be reviewing results from the surveys (thanks to the 25 who responded!) and begin our planning for 2024. The meeting is open to all Guild members.
  • We are having elections for two positions for our 2024 Guild Board in November. If you are interested in the position of president or program coordinator (two-year commitments), please speak with one of the other Board members: Debbie Juul, Treasurer; Judith Bither, Secretary; or Marcia Smith, Program Coordinator.

CCC Wellness Fair

We have been invited to have a table at Chemeketa Community College Wellness Fair on Tuesday, September 12 from 10 a.m. – 12 noon. We want to share the health aspects of knitting and have been told that several employees are interested in learning!

If you would like to share your love of knitting and answer questions, please respond to the Guild email. It would be great to have three of us there to represent the Guild. Thanks for considering this.

July Meeting Highlights

President Joyce Cook opened the meeting by welcoming members and guests. She reminded everyone that we should have received a short survey in our email. Thank you to the 20 people who have responded. Paper copies were available for those who wish to fill out a hard copy. A second email will be sent out with the survey for those who haven’t responded yet. The intention is to help in planning programs and outings for 2024.

Our August meeting will be at The Big Leaf Coffee House and Grill in Smith Creek Village inside Silver Falls State Park. We will meet at 11:30 for lunch, followed by knitting on the green. Please bring a folding chair.

Joyce Arthur announced that the Guild is invited to display our Aran scarves at the Oregon State Fair. If you finished the scarf, please bring it to the August meeting or make arrangements with Su Fennern to pick it up.

Mini Sweater Tips & Tricks

Kitty Crawford showed the sweater she had knit with the following tips: it’s worked flat, picking up stitches for the sleeves. She suggested that in order to have a smooth look when stranding, twist every third stitch or so.

July Show & Tell Patterns

Program – Coral Reef Project

Janet Bubl showed a PowerPoint highlighting the history of the Coral Reef Project. The organizers are still needing some knit or crochet bleached coral. Donations can be dropped off at Teaselwick yarn shop at the Mill. More information and patterns are on our Guild website. Coral Reef items are due by August 1.

Janet also updated us on the status of our knitting project for 2023: Knitting hats, scarves and mitts for breast cancer survivors. Please bring any items to the September meeting.

The rest of the meeting was knitting and exchanging items of yarn, patterns and notions on the tables which we called Christmas in July!

August Meeting

Join us on August 12 for our Annual Gathering at The Big Leaf Coffee House and Grill in Smith Creek Village at Silver Falls State Park. We’ll gather in the café at 11:30, order lunch and visit, then move outside on the lawn to knit! Please bring a folding lawn chair. (There will be help getting it from your car and back if you need it.) A flyer with details was sent to your email.

June Meeting Minutes

The meeting was led by Marcia Smith, Program Coordinator, who welcomed members and guests. Marcia noted that our President resigned, and we are asking for a volunteer to step in for the rest of 2023. Joyce Cook volunteered, and those present applauded her willingness to help. Marcia further commented that in addition to electing a new President at the end of the year, we are also seeking a new Program Coordinator
as she will have completed her two-year commitment. Members are encouraged to consider one of these positions and asked to speak to any Board member about what is involved.

A survey to determine interest in program topics and activities will be coming to your email in the next week or so.

June Show & Tell Patterns

Tiny Sweater for the Month

Marcia Graciosa showed the sweater for
the month (the Squeak Sweater) and offered tips and tricks for the pattern. All the patterns for the sweaters through August are on the Guild website.

Program – Pom Poms!

There were tables set up around the room to try several ways of making pom-poms using yarn and fake fur. The most unique table featured the “Loomie” that was able to make various pompoms and tassels. It’s available to purchase at many local yarn shops.

May Meeting Minutes

President Sharon Kaminski opened the meeting by welcoming members and two visitors. She thanked Su Fennern for making new name tags.

Sheep to Shawl

Su Fennern thanked all the many volunteers who hosted our Guild table. Pam Sullivan, who organized the event, said it was the “best ever” with so many volunteers and items shared from a variety of Fiber Guilds.

Tiny Sweater for the Month

Patty Scruggs showed the sweater for
the month (the Iced Sweater). She knitted two and talked about the different seaming method she used on each one. Patty commented that she’s enjoying the mini sweaters and will make more. It’s giving us a lot of practice on numerous techniques. It was clarified that the mini sweater patterns through June are posted on the Guild website.

Program – Buttons

We had four break-out sessions learning how to make knitted or woven buttons or “frog” closures and how to reinforce button bands.

Upcoming Events

June Meeting

Join us at the Willamette Heritage Center on June 10 from 10 a.m. to noon. In addition to the sweater of the month, our “Make and Take” Program is trying five different ways to make pompons. Bring yarn and scissors.

Interested Guild members are invited to join the Fiber Guild for a special demonstration of weaving.

Regretfully, Sharon Kaminski found it necessary to resign as the President of the Millstream Knitting Guild. The Guild needs someone to finish out the rest of the year.

According to our By-laws, the President presides over the Guild meetings and sits on Guild committees. They also preside over quarterly Board meetings.
