New Conversations Speaker Series
Join us as we kick off a new speaker series celebrating the 50th anniversary
of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, an Oregon-made film that brought critical
attention to mental health issues. Shot at the Oregon State Hospital, the film’s legacy continues to spark conversation about mental health, and we are reflecting on its impact all year.
The Pain We See: A Conversation with Dr. Ron Turker and Dr. Michael Harris – Thursday, May 15, 6-7:30 PM, at the Fox Tower in downtown Portland – The first in our New Conversations series, we’ll explore some themes from the film—mental health, stigma, and societal progress—with Dr. Ron Turker and Dr. Michael Harris. They’ll discuss how these issues continue to shape our understanding and how we can move forward in supporting mental health in our communities.
Michael Harris, Ph.D., is a child and adolescent psychologist whose focus is on kids with chronic health conditions including: diabetes, cystic fibrosis, inflammatory bowel disease, cancer, and chronic pain. He founded the OHSU/ Doernbecher Children’s hospital NICH program. Novel Interventions in Children’s Healthcare, an innovative, wraparound service to help families of kids with complex health conditions.
Ron Turker, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon, started med school and stand-up comedy in the same year. Labeled a “multitasker” in the ‘80s, his more modern diagnosis would be ADDD, “Attention Deficit Doctor Disorder.” Thirty years of surgical practice taught him, the pain we feel is always real, and often can’t be seen on an MRI.
And… he has had the distinct privilege of working with Dr. Michael Harris.
The Oregonian published a story about the Knitting for Mental Fitness campaign.
President Joyce Arthur also appeared on KOIN TV with Rick Snook to talk about the campaign.
Join us at Wild Knits to work on the Watch Cap hats for the 50th anniversary of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest movie celebration, while enjoying other knitters’ company and maybe meeting someone new. We will be meeting the third Saturday of each month from 11-1. Wild Knits is located at 310 High Street NE in Salem if you’ve not been there before. The sale of the Watch Caps will be supporting the Oregon State Hospital Museum of Mental Health and the ABLE non-profit organization.
The Oregon State Hospital Museum of Mental Health is wanting partners to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest movie, which was filmed at the Oregon State Hospital.
Guild members will be knitting the Watch Cap that Jack Nicholson wore during the movie. The 1941 American Red Cross Hat Pattern was the official U.S. Navy watch cap worn by sailors until the 1970’s. The pattern has been adapted in celebration of this anniversary.
